Introduction to Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art that emphasizes using an opponent's own momentum and techniques to disarm and control them.

Our budo (martial art) techniques fall into two categories: throws and joint holds. Practitioners learn to redirect an opponent's energy, executing throws with minimal effort. Joint holds align with natural joint movements, ensuring harmony with the body's structure.

Although many begin this martial art for self-defense, mastering it requires time and overcoming natural panic responses during attacks. It typically takes about a year to develop self-defense skills, as training emphasizes staying calm under pressure—essential for any self-defense system.

Aikido’s principle of non-resistance involves harmonizing with an attack, redirecting energy through circular, relaxed movements. This adaptability makes it suitable for all ages, genders, and body types, relying on skill over strength.

Beyond physical training, Aikido cultivates mental discipline, coordinating mind and body, and eventually mastering breath control to enhance power. True understanding comes through practice under experienced teachers, embracing early challenges

THE TEAM

My name is Bronson Pona and I am the founder of the Wainuiomata Aikido Club here in Wellington NZ. My journey began many many years ago in a place called Rotorua, where I stumbled across a dojo, where they were teaching Aikido. Immediately I felt welcomed and safe, and I was taken back by how peaceful and beautiful the movements were.
